The heart of the Mazda RX8 is Mazda’s newly developed twin-rotor rotary engine, called ‘RENESIS’. The name symbolises modern ‘revolutionary’ advances in rotary engine technology. Today’s smooth revving Mazda rotary power plant combines high levels of performance, with acceptable fuel consumption and emissions.
Both models feature two 654cc rotors within the compact engine block. The entry model produces 192ps at 7,000rpm, with maximum torque of 220Nm achieved at 5,000rpm. The flagship model generates 231ps at 8,200rpm, with maximum torque of 211Nm at 5,500rpm. A five-speed gearbox is fitted to the 192ps model and a six-speed unit to the 231ps car.
The 192ps model accelerates to 62mph in 7.2 seconds, while the 231ps model takes just 6.4 seconds. Fuel economy on the combined cycle ranges from 25.2-to-26.7 mpg with CO2 ratings of 267-to-284 g/km – depending on model.
